In a significant political development, former Senator Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to the party's alleged lack of effective leadership and governance.
Melaye, who previously represented Kogi West Senatorial District, announced his resignation through a letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State. In the letter, he expressed his immediate withdrawal from all party activities, stating:
> "I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement. This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation."
Melaye's resignation follows a series of internal conflicts within the PDP. In September 2024, the Kogi State chapter of the party suspended him over allegations of anti-party activities and misconduct. The suspension was enacted by the ward executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1 after Melaye failed to appear before a disciplinary committee set up to investigate the allegations.
The PDP's internal strife has been marked by accusations of commercialization and privatization of the party, with Melaye previously criticizing the acting chairman, Umar Damagum, and other leaders for allegedly destroying the party's integrity.
Melaye's departure adds to the growing list of high-profile exits from the PDP, raising concerns about the party's stability and future prospects in Nigerian politics.
