Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Special Adviser on Political Matters to Vice President Kashim Shettima, has expressed concern over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s silence regarding swirling rumours that he may drop Shettima ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking in a recent interview on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed noted that the President's failure to personally refute the speculation gave room for unnecessary political tension and conspiracy theories. “If it’s a non-issue, the President should have personally addressed and debunked it,” he stated. “That would’ve shut down the mischief and assured the nation of political stability.”
The rumour, which has circulated heavily on social media and within political circles, suggests that the APC-led administration is considering replacing Vice President Shettima with another candidate — possibly from the South-East — as part of a wider political recalibration ahead of 2027. While no official source has confirmed such plans, Baba-Ahmed insists that the vacuum of silence can be politically dangerous.
Baba-Ahmed, a respected northern elder statesman and former INEC secretary, warned that narratives like these, if not managed proactively, can create distrust among key regional blocs and destabilize internal party unity.
He, however, affirmed the Vice President’s commitment to his duties, dismissing the rumour as “unfounded but politically toxic.” He urged Nigerians to focus on the performance and service delivery of the administration rather than being distracted by speculation.
This development comes amid rising political maneuvering within and outside the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with analysts noting early signs of power blocks re-aligning in anticipation of the 2027 electoral cycle.
