In a landmark moment that blends tradition, legality, and political maturity, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has officially presented the Staff of Office to the newly installed Akire of Ikireland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Olanrewaju Tajudeen Akinola, Akintula I—signaling a new era of unity and continuity for the historic town of Ikire.
The grand event drew massive crowds as residents of Ikire trooped out in celebration, filling the streets from the main expressway to the royal palace. The atmosphere was electric, with chants of “Imole!” echoing across the town as the governor—who spent part of his early school years in Ikire—acknowledged the cheers in a slow, symbolic procession to the coronation venue.
A Victory for Continuity and Rule of Law
In his address, Governor Adeleke emphasized that the installation was not just a ceremonial exercise, but a deliberate commitment to due process, rule of law, and respect for traditional institutions. According to him, the decision to install Oba Akinola was guided strictly by the Terms of Settlement reached and affirmed by the Court of Appeal in Akure in 2025.
The Akire stool had been a subject of prolonged legal and communal disputes dating back decades. The crisis intensified following a 2014 Supreme Court judgment, which ruled that the Lambeloye Ruling House—producers of the late Oba Olatunde Falabi—had no legal right to occupy the throne when a vacancy occurred in 1987.
Governor Adeleke noted that the lingering tensions led to a collaborative resolution effort under the administration of his predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola. That process involved all five recognized ruling houses in Ikire and resulted in an amendment of the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration.
The amendment paved the way for the Aketula Ruling House to produce the next monarch whenever the stool became vacant. This agreement was later solidified through a legally binding settlement, which the Court of Appeal upheld in 2025—clearly stipulating that Prince Olanrewaju Tajudeen Akinola of the Aketula lineage should be installed as Akire, provided he was alive at the time of vacancy.
“I have done the right thing for the people of Ikire,” Governor Adeleke declared, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to sustaining peace and honoring lawful agreements.

The event also witnessed rare bipartisan acknowledgment of governance continuity. Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Benedict Alabi, openly commended Governor Adeleke for upholding and implementing the succession agreement initiated under the previous administration.
