Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), an aspirant for the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, has expressed strong support for the proposed creation of State Police as a strategic step toward addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ogunbayo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the conversation around decentralised policing, describing the proposal as a bold and necessary move aimed at strengthening security at the grassroots level.
According to Ogunbayo, Nigeria’s security architecture must evolve to better serve citizens within their communities, where many of the country’s security threats occur.
“Nigeria’s security must work for the people — right in our communities,” he said. “For too long, communities across the country have waited for solutions that are closer to the people. The creation of State Police will empower states to respond more quickly to threats, understand local security realities, and provide better protection for lives and property.”
The House of Representatives aspirant noted that many communities in Ibadan and across Oyo State continue to face security concerns that require faster and more localized responses from law enforcement agencies.
“As someone aspiring to represent the good people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, I understand the challenges our people face daily. Decentralised policing will help ensure quicker responses to security incidents, safer streets, and stronger communities,” Ogunbayo stated.
He further emphasized that community-based security structures would allow security agencies to better understand local dynamics, cultural contexts, and emerging threats, ultimately leading to more effective crime prevention and law enforcement.
Ogunbayo also called on members of the National Assembly to support the initiative when it is formally presented for legislative consideration, stressing that the safety of Nigerians must remain a national priority.
“I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his courage in pushing this important national conversation forward. I also urge the National Assembly to carefully consider and support the move in the interest of building a safer and stronger Nigeria,” he added.
The proposed State Police system has generated significant national debate in recent years, with many stakeholders arguing that decentralised policing could improve response times, strengthen intelligence gathering, and enhance the ability of states to tackle security threats unique to their regions.
For Ogunbayo, the conversation about security reform represents an opportunity for Nigeria to adopt practical solutions that place the safety and well-being of citizens first.
“Nigeria must be safe. Our communities deserve peace, stability, and a security system that truly protects the people,” he concluded.
As conversations around security reform continue across the country, Ogunbayo reaffirmed his commitment to advocating policies that prioritise grassroots development, public safety, and responsive governance for the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West.
