Fresh political controversy has erupted in Oyo State following explosive claims by political figure and chieftain, Olopoeyan, who alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde financially supported the establishment of Agidigbo 88.7 FM owned by popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat.
According to statements currently making rounds across social media platforms, Olopoeyan claimed he was the person who introduced Oriyomi Hamzat to Governor Makinde around 2018 when the broadcaster was still building his media influence mainly through Facebook content creation and grassroots online engagement.
Olopoeyan reportedly stated that at the time, Oriyomi was widely known for his humorous commentary, thought-provoking discussions, and socially conscious content on Facebook before eventually transitioning into mainstream radio broadcasting.
The controversial politician further alleged that Governor Makinde played a major role in supporting the emergence of Agidigbo FM, challenging Nigerians to “ask Oriyomi where he got the money” used in establishing the station.
The remarks have since generated intense reactions across political and media circles in Oyo State, especially as Oriyomi Hamzat continues to grow into one of the most influential media personalities in South-West Nigeria.
Founded in 2021, Agidigbo 88.7 FM quickly became one of the most talked-about radio stations in Ibadan due to its grassroots-focused broadcasting style, heavy use of Yoruba language programming, and its strong emphasis on human rights, social justice, and public advocacy.
The station, popularly branded as “the people’s voice,” gained massive popularity through programmes addressing societal issues, family disputes, governance, and public complaints. Oriyomi Hamzat himself became widely recognized for intervening in sensitive public matters and amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians.
Before launching the station, Hamzat had worked with several media organizations including BCOS, Raypower FM, and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria. Reports also indicate that he previously operated an online radio platform before eventually launching Agidigbo FM in Ibadan.
Political observers believe the latest allegations may not be unconnected to the growing political conversations surrounding Oriyomi Hamzat’s increasing influence in Oyo State politics.
In recent months, discussions about Hamzat’s possible political ambitions have intensified, especially after his growing involvement in public advocacy and political commentary. His relationship with Governor Makinde has also continued to attract public attention, with supporters and critics expressing differing opinions about the closeness between both personalities.
While some supporters of the broadcaster insist that Agidigbo FM’s success was built through public support, popularity, and Oriyomi’s years of media experience, critics continue to question the financial strength behind the rapid rise of the station.
Neither Governor Seyi Makinde nor Oriyomi Hamzat has officially responded in detail to the latest allegations as of the time of filing this report.
However, Oriyomi Hamzat has previously dismissed claims suggesting that Agidigbo FM was solely built through political sponsorship. In a recent viral reaction circulating online, the broadcaster insisted that the station was not established by Governor Makinde for personal gain.
The controversy has once again highlighted the powerful intersection between media, politics, and influence in Oyo State, especially ahead of growing political permutations toward the 2027 governorship race.
Many political analysts now believe that Oriyomi Hamzat’s influence has evolved beyond traditional broadcasting into a broader grassroots political movement capable of shaping public opinion across the state.
As debates continue online, the allegations from Olopoeyan have added another dramatic layer to the already complicated political relationship between media personalities and political power brokers in Oyo State.
