Democracy Day: Yerima Celebrates the Spirit of June 12, Calls for Greater People's Participation in Governance

As Nigerians across the nation commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, the Leader of Councillors in Ona Ara Local Government, Hon. Oluwafemi Abolade Gabriel (Yerima), has extended warm greetings to the people of Ona Ara, Oyo State, and Nigerians at large, urging citizens to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and promoting good governance.

In his Democracy Day message, Yerima described June 12 as more than just a public holiday, noting that it represents the triumph of the people's will, courage, and unwavering quest for justice. He emphasized that the date remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians who fought to ensure that democracy prevailed in the country.

According to him, the significance of June 12 lies in the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria's history. The election, won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, was annulled by the military government, sparking nationwide agitation for the restoration of democratic rule.

"June 12 symbolizes the resilience of Nigerians and our collective determination to build a nation where the voice of every citizen matters. It reminds us that democracy thrives when leaders remain accountable to the people and when citizens actively participate in the governance process," Yerima stated.

The Ona Ara Councillors' Leader further called on public office holders at all levels to embrace transparency, service, and people-oriented leadership, stressing that democracy can only flourish when government actions reflect the aspirations of the masses.

He reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development, youth empowerment, community advancement, and policies that improve the welfare of ordinary citizens across Ona Ara Local Government.

Yerima also encouraged young people to take a more active role in politics and governance, describing them as critical stakeholders in shaping the future of the nation.

"As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, justice, peace, and progress. Together, we can build stronger communities and a better future for generations yet unborn," he added.

The Federal Government officially designated June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy Day in 2018, moving the celebration from May 29 in recognition of the historical importance of the 1993 election and the democratic struggles associated with it.

As Nigerians reflect on the nation's democratic journey, Hon. Oluwafemi Abolade Gabriel (Yerima) urged citizens not to view democracy as a spectator activity but as a collective responsibility that requires active participation, vigilance, and commitment from all.

"Democracy is not a spectator sport; it is a shared responsibility. Together, we must continue to protect it, strengthen it, and make it work for everyone."This version subtly projects Yerima as a visionary grassroots leader while strengthening his public image ahead of any future State House of Assembly ambition in Ona Ara.
