Enough of Darkness: Okere of Saki Storms Power Minister’s Office, Demands Better Electricity for Oke-Ogun

Okere of Saki Meets Power Minister Joseph Tegbe, Pushes for Improved Electricity Supply and Completion of Key Power Projects

The Okere of Sakiland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Surveyor Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Oyedepo III, has paid a strategic visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, to discuss critical issues surrounding electricity supply and infrastructure development in Saki and the wider Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State.

The high-level engagement underscores the growing concern among traditional institutions and community leaders over the impact of inadequate power supply on economic growth, industrial development, education, healthcare delivery, and overall quality of life in many parts of the country.

During the meeting, Oba Oyedepo emphasized the urgent need for a stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity supply to unlock the vast economic potential of Saki and neighboring communities. He noted that access to electricity remains one of the most important drivers of socio-economic development, particularly in agrarian and emerging commercial hubs such as the Oke-Ogun zone. The monarch stressed that improved power infrastructure would significantly boost small and medium-scale enterprises, attract investors, support local industries, and create employment opportunities for thousands of residents.

The revered traditional ruler also reportedly advocated for the completion and expansion of ongoing power projects that would improve electricity distribution and transmission within the region. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the visit focused on ensuring that communities within Saki and surrounding areas benefit from ongoing reforms and investments in Nigeria’s power sector.

Oba Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Oyedepo III, who ascended the throne as the Okere of Saki in 2020, has consistently championed initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of his people. A trained surveyor and respected community leader, the monarch has remained vocal on issues relating to infrastructure, youth development, economic empowerment, and sustainable community growth.

The visit comes at a time when the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to improve electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across Nigeria. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe recently highlighted ongoing reforms within the sector and expressed optimism about improvements in electricity supply across several parts of the country. Government officials have maintained that increased investments, policy reforms, and collaborations with stakeholders are expected to strengthen the nation's power infrastructure and enhance service delivery to consumers.

Observers believe that the intervention of traditional rulers in developmental matters has become increasingly important, particularly in bridging communication gaps between government institutions and grassroots communities. Traditional institutions often serve as vital stakeholders in identifying local challenges and advocating for solutions that directly affect their people.

The meeting between the Okere of Saki and the Minister of Power is being viewed as a positive step toward addressing longstanding electricity challenges in Oke-Ogun. Residents and business owners within the region have repeatedly called for improved power supply to support economic activities, reduce dependence on costly alternative energy sources, and encourage industrial expansion.

Many stakeholders have also expressed hope that continued collaboration between traditional leaders, government agencies, and private sector investors will accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure projects capable of transforming the economic landscape of Saki and its neighboring communities.

As Nigeria continues its quest for a more efficient and reliable power sector, engagements such as this demonstrate the important role traditional rulers can play in advocating for development, promoting inclusive governance, and ensuring that the needs of their communities remain at the forefront of national policy discussions.

For the people of Saki and the broader Oke-Ogun region, the outcome of this engagement could mark another significant step toward improved electricity access, enhanced economic opportunities, and sustainable development. :::
