Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has stirred fresh political controversy following his comments on the recent abduction crisis in Oyo State, suggesting that the incident may have been manipulated to create negative perceptions about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Fayose, known for his outspoken and often provocative political remarks, stated that he sometimes believes the abduction incident in Oyo State was orchestrated in a manner intended to blackmail President Tinubu and portray the Federal Government as ineffective in tackling insecurity.
The former governor’s statement comes amid widespread public outrage over the kidnapping of pupils, students, and teachers from schools in the Esiele community of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The attack, which occurred in May 2026, drew national attention after armed gunmen reportedly invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School, abducting several victims and leaving at least one teacher dead.
While Fayose did not provide evidence to support his allegation, his remarks have generated intense debate across political and social circles, especially given the already tense political relationship between some stakeholders in Oyo State and the Federal Government.
The former Ekiti governor’s comments surfaced at a time when security agencies continue efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims. President Tinubu had earlier condemned the attack, describing the killing of one of the kidnapped teachers as barbaric and assuring Nigerians that security forces were working around the clock to rescue those still in captivity.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the Federal Government has been collaborating closely with the Oyo State Government and security agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims. The President also directed the Inspector-General of Police to coordinate a technology-driven rescue operation while promising that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice.
The incident has further reignited discussions about insecurity in parts of the South-West region and the growing threat posed by kidnappers targeting schools and rural communities. Reports indicate that the abduction triggered panic among residents and school authorities across several communities, with concerns mounting over the safety of students and teachers.
In response to the crisis, the Federal Government announced additional security measures, including the approval of 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State and the deployment of a special rescue team to strengthen operations in affected areas.
Fayose’s allegation is the latest in a series of public criticisms and political exchanges involving key figures in the South-West political landscape. The former governor has, in recent months, made several comments concerning Governor Seyi Makinde and his relationship with President Tinubu, fueling speculation about the growing political realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
Political observers note that Fayose’s latest statement is likely to provoke strong reactions from both supporters and critics of the Oyo State Government. While some may view his comments as a call for deeper scrutiny into the handling of the security situation, others have described the allegation as highly sensitive and lacking verifiable proof.
As rescue efforts continue and investigations into the abduction unfold, the incident remains one of the most significant security challenges confronting Oyo State in recent times. The controversy generated by Fayose’s remarks is expected to further intensify political discussions surrounding governance, security, and accountability in Nigeria.
For now, attention remains focused on the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the determination of security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attack.Key figures mentioned: Ayodele Fayose, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Seyi Makinde.
