As the world commemorates the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), a leading aspirant for the House of Representatives representing the Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, has joined millions of people across the globe in advocating for environmental sustainability, responsible land management, and collective action against the growing threats of desertification and water scarcity.
The annual observance, established by the United Nations, serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect our environment, preserve natural resources, and ensure a sustainable future for coming generations. It highlights the devastating impact of land degradation, climate change, deforestation, and drought on communities, food security, economic development, and human well-being.
In his goodwill message, Hon. OJO emphasized that environmental sustainability is not merely a global responsibility but also a local imperative that directly affects the livelihoods of citizens, particularly in developing nations such as Nigeria.
"Today, as the global community observes the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, I urge governments, institutions, community leaders, and citizens to renew their commitment to protecting our environment. Sustainable land use, tree planting initiatives, responsible waste management, water conservation, and climate-conscious policies must become central to our development agenda," he stated.
According to him, environmental challenges remain among the greatest threats facing humanity, and proactive measures are needed to ensure that future generations inherit a healthier and more productive environment.
Hon. OJO further noted that environmental protection, youth engagement, economic empowerment, and sustainable development are interconnected pillars necessary for building resilient communities and advancing national progress.
"As representatives and future leaders, we must champion policies that protect our natural resources while creating opportunities for economic growth. A healthy environment translates into healthier communities, stronger economies, and a better quality of life for our people."
Drawing inspiration from history, Hon. OJO also reflected on another significant event associated with June 17—the arrival of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor in 1885. The iconic monument, gifted by France to the United States and transported in 214 crates aboard the French ship Isère, has since become one of the world's most enduring symbols of freedom, hope, democracy, and opportunity.
He observed that the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty remains relevant today, particularly for emerging democracies and societies striving for inclusive governance and equitable development.
"The Statue of Liberty reminds us that freedom carries responsibility. It calls on leaders to serve with integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. As citizens, it reminds us that progress is achieved when we work together for the common good."
Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo reiterated his commitment to championing policies and initiatives that prioritize sustainable development, youth empowerment, infrastructural advancement, environmental responsibility, and improved living standards across Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency.
He called on residents, stakeholders, community organizations, and young people to become active participants in efforts aimed at building cleaner, greener, and more prosperous communities.
"As we celebrate this important day, let us remember that every tree planted, every drop of water conserved, and every effort made toward environmental protection contributes to a stronger future. Together, we can create a constituency and a nation where development goes hand in hand with sustainability."
Hon. OJO concluded by reaffirming his vision for a constituency driven by innovation, inclusive growth, responsive representation, and people-centered leadership, expressing confidence that through collective action and purposeful governance, greater opportunities and lasting progress can be achieved for all.
