Florence Ajimobi Arrives in Vienna to Begin Diplomatic Mission as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria

Former Oyo State First Lady, Florence Ajimobi, has officially arrived in Vienna, Austria, to commence her duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative to International Organisations headquartered in the Austrian capital. Her arrival marks the beginning of a significant diplomatic assignment aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral engagements in Europe.

Mrs. Ajimobi, the widow of former Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a new wave of ambassadorial appointments designed to reinforce Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and deepen the country's diplomatic footprint across key international missions. She was among the non-career ambassadors nominated by the President and subsequently deployed to strategic diplomatic posts following the completion of the appointment process.

Announcing her arrival on Friday, Ajimobi disclosed that she was warmly received at the VIP Wing of Vienna International Airport by the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Nigeria, Mr. Muyiwa Onifade, alongside senior officials of the mission, home-based officers, local staff, and members of the Nigerian community in Austria. Representatives of organisations including the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), the Oduduwa Group, the Igbo Cultural Group, the Nigeria-Austria Friendship Group, and Nigerian students in Austria were also present to welcome the new ambassador.

Expressing appreciation for the warm reception, Ajimobi said she looked forward to working closely with the embassy staff, the Nigerian community, Austrian authorities, and international partners to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Austria.

Her diplomatic responsibilities extend beyond bilateral relations with Austria. As Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to international organisations based in Vienna, she will represent the country at several globally significant institutions, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and other multilateral bodies headquartered in the Austrian capital. These organisations play vital roles in areas such as nuclear cooperation, international security, crime prevention, anti-corruption efforts, drug control, sustainable development, and global diplomacy.

Her appointment is expected to contribute to Nigeria's efforts to attract foreign investment, promote trade and economic cooperation, strengthen cultural and educational exchanges, and enhance collaboration on international security and development issues. Observers also expect her to work towards improving engagement with Nigerians living in Austria while advancing Nigeria's interests within the international community.

Before her diplomatic appointment, Florence Ajimobi was widely recognised for her public service and humanitarian initiatives during her tenure as First Lady of Oyo State. Through various empowerment and social intervention programmes, she championed initiatives focused on women, youth, education, healthcare, and vulnerable members of society, earning recognition for her community development efforts.

Her arrival in Vienna represents another chapter in her public service career, this time on the global stage, where she is expected to leverage diplomacy to strengthen Nigeria's international partnerships and project the country's interests across key global institutions.

As Nigeria continues to reposition its foreign policy under the current administration, the deployment of experienced political and professional appointees to strategic diplomatic missions is seen as part of broader efforts to enhance international cooperation, attract investment opportunities, and deepen bilateral relations with partner nations.

With her official resumption in Vienna, Ambassador Florence Ajimobi now assumes responsibility for promoting Nigeria's diplomatic, economic, cultural, and strategic interests in Austria while representing the country in some of the world's most influential international organisations.
