Nigerian-American Harvard Graduate Yinka Ogunbiyi Revolutionises Haircare with World's First Braid-Assist Robot, Secures $7 Million in Funding

Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard University graduate Yinka Ogunbiyi is gaining international recognition after developing HaloBraid, the world's first braid-assist robotic device designed to support professional hairstylists by reducing physical strain and dramatically cutting the time required for hair braiding. The breakthrough innovation has already attracted $7 million in seed funding and generated overwhelming market interest, with more than 7,000 professional salons joining its waiting list ahead of commercial launch. 

HaloBraid was created to address one of the beauty industry's longest-standing challenges—the physically demanding and time-consuming process of braiding textured hair. Rather than replacing hairstylists, the technology is designed to work alongside them by automating the repetitive section of the braiding process, allowing professionals to focus on creativity, precision and customer experience. 

According to reports, stylists begin each braid by manually parting the hair, creating the initial anchor and setting the style. HaloBraid then completes the repetitive length of the braid before the stylist performs the finishing touches, ensuring the final hairstyle meets the client's desired look. This collaborative approach enables salons to complete appointments significantly faster while reducing the risk of repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis that many professional braiders experience after years in the industry. 

The startup behind HaloBraid recently secured $7 million in seed financing in a funding round led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Additional investments came from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital, with the funding expected to accelerate product development, manufacturing and commercial deployment across professional salons. 

Ogunbiyi holds a joint Master of Science in Engineering and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard's engineering and business schools. Before launching HaloBraid, she built a career developing smart home and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, combining engineering expertise with entrepreneurial innovation. 

The inspiration for HaloBraid reportedly came during the COVID-19 pandemic when Ogunbiyi attempted to install her own knotless braids, a process that took four days to complete. The experience highlighted the enormous amount of time and physical effort required for protective hairstyles and motivated her to create a technological solution capable of improving efficiency without sacrificing quality or craftsmanship. She later partnered with co-founder David Afolabi to bring the concept to life. 

Industry estimates suggest that billions of hours are spent on hair braiding globally every year, with many appointments lasting six hours or more. HaloBraid aims to reduce that burden by helping stylists complete braids up to five times faster, potentially increasing salon productivity, improving earnings and allowing clients to spend less time in the salon chair. 

The innovation has earned praise from the United States Mission in Nigeria, which described HaloBraid as an example of American innovation with global impact while celebrating Ogunbiyi's achievement as a Nigerian-American entrepreneur making meaningful contributions to the beauty technology sector. 

With strong investor backing, patented technology and thousands of salons already expressing interest before launch, HaloBraid is positioning itself as one of the most promising innovations in the textured haircare industry. By combining robotics with professional hairstyling, Yinka Ogunbiyi is demonstrating how technology can enhance traditional skills, improve working conditions for stylists and reshape the future of salon services worldwide.
