Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised passengers and crew members aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Israel after a dramatic mid-air incident that forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement following the incident, Netanyahu said: “I commend the heroes on the flight from Dubai who showed resourcefulness and courage. I have instructed the security system to prepare for potential additional threats.” His comments came as Israeli authorities began assessing the circumstances surrounding the serious security incident.
The aircraft, Flydubai Flight FZ1073, was travelling from Dubai toward Tel Aviv when an altercation reportedly broke out between the pilots. According to Netanyahu and Israeli officials, one pilot stabbed the other and apparently attempted to take control of the aircraft.
The situation quickly escalated after the plane transmitted emergency signals and underwent a rapid descent. Flight-tracking information cited by the Associated Press indicated that the aircraft descended from approximately 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute before making an erratic turn and eventually diverting to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Passengers and members of the crew reportedly intervened when the situation became critical. Netanyahu said an Israeli passenger and a crew member managed to enter the cockpit and overpower the pilot involved in the attack. Additional crew members subsequently entered the cockpit and helped stabilize the aircraft.
The intervention prevented what Netanyahu described as a potential major disaster. He said the passengers who acted during the emergency demonstrated exceptional courage and resourcefulness and credited them with saving lives.
The aircraft ultimately landed safely at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities reportedly arrested the pilot accused of attacking his colleague, while the injured pilots were taken for medical treatment. Authorities in the region have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The episode initially triggered fears of a hijacking because the aircraft transmitted an emergency code associated with unlawful interference. Israel reportedly scrambled fighter aircraft in response to concerns that the plane could have been under hostile control.
Israeli officials have been examining whether the incident was an attempted terrorist attack. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and important details—including the motive of the pilot and the precise sequence of events inside the cockpit—have yet to be conclusively established. Reuters reported that Israeli officials were treating the incident as a potential security threat, while noting that reports concerning the motive and nationality of the suspected attacker were not immediately confirmed by all relevant authorities.
Netanyahu's warning about possible additional threats also comes against a backdrop of heightened security concerns in Israel. Just a day earlier, he had warned that Israel's enemies could attempt attacks ahead of the country's upcoming elections, although Israeli officials subsequently said there was no specific intelligence warning of an imminent attack at that time.
For the passengers aboard Flight FZ1073, however, the immediate priority was survival. What began as a routine journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a high-stakes emergency, ending with the aircraft safely on the ground in Saudi Arabia.
The investigation is expected to determine exactly what triggered the confrontation between the pilots, whether the incident was deliberately planned, and whether any wider security threat was involved.
