Independence at 66: OJO Salutes Nigerians, Calls for Unity, Youth Empowerment and People-Centred Development

As Nigeria commemorates its 66th Independence Anniversary, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), an APC stalwart in Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, has extended warm felicitations to Nigerians at home and abroad, calling for renewed patriotism, unity, inclusive development and stronger commitment to building a prosperous future for the nation.

In his Independence Day goodwill message, OJO described October 1 as more than a date on the national calendar, stressing that the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country's journey, celebrate its achievements, acknowledge its challenges and renew their collective determination to build a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria.

According to OJO, Nigeria's greatest asset remains its people, particularly the young population whose creativity, resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and capacity for innovation can play a decisive role in shaping the country's economic and social future.

OJO: Youths Must Be at the Centre of National Development

OJO emphasised the importance of investing in young Nigerians through quality education, vocational training, digital skills, entrepreneurship, employment opportunities, sports development, creative industries and access to economic opportunities.

He noted that meaningful youth empowerment should go beyond political rhetoric and translate into practical opportunities that enable young people to become self-reliant, productive and active participants in their communities.

«“Nigeria's young people are not merely leaders of tomorrow; they are important stakeholders in the Nigeria we are building today. When we equip our youths with knowledge, skills, opportunities and the right environment to thrive, we strengthen the foundation of our nation.”»

He further called for stronger collaboration among government, the private sector, community organisations, political stakeholders and young Nigerians to develop sustainable programmes capable of addressing unemployment, poverty and limited access to economic opportunities.

A Call for Unity and Responsible Citizenship

The APC stalwart also urged Nigerians to place national interest above divisions and partisan differences, stressing that the country's diversity should remain a source of strength rather than division.

OJO called on citizens to embrace peaceful coexistence, democratic participation, respect for the rule of law, accountability and responsible citizenship, noting that nation-building requires contributions from everyone regardless of political, ethnic, religious or socioeconomic background.

«“Our political differences must never become greater than our shared identity as Nigerians. We can belong to different political tendencies and still work together for peace, development and prosperity.”»

Grassroots Development and People-Centred Politics

Speaking particularly to residents of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, OJO reiterated the importance of grassroots engagement and people-centred leadership.

He maintained that effective politics should ultimately translate into better opportunities, stronger communities, improved human capital development and tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.

According to him, political leadership should be measured not simply by positions occupied but by the ability to listen to constituents, understand their aspirations and contribute constructively to solutions affecting their everyday lives.

OJO therefore encouraged young people, women, entrepreneurs, artisans, traders, professionals, community leaders and other stakeholders within the constituency to remain actively engaged in civic and democratic processes.

OJO Advocates Hope, Patriotism and Collective Responsibility

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, OJO acknowledged the challenges confronting the country while urging citizens not to lose faith in Nigeria's potential.

He called for a renewed national spirit anchored on hard work, innovation, patriotism, tolerance, accountability, inclusion and collective responsibility.

According to him, the responsibility of building a better Nigeria does not rest solely with government, but also with citizens, businesses, civil society, traditional institutions, religious organisations, community leaders and the younger generation.

«“The Nigeria we desire will not be built by government alone. Every citizen has a role to play. Our communities, our institutions and our political leadership must work together to create an environment where every Nigerian has the opportunity to dream, work and succeed.”»

OJO's Independence Day Message

OJO expressed his appreciation to Nigerians for their resilience and sacrifices and urged citizens to use the Independence anniversary to renew their commitment to peace, unity and national development.

He particularly extended his goodwill to the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West, assuring them of his continued commitment to grassroots engagement, constructive political participation and advocacy for initiatives that promote human capital development and economic empowerment.

As an APC stalwart, OJO also reaffirmed the importance of constructive participation in the democratic process and encouraged party members and supporters to continue promoting peaceful politics, issue-based engagement and development-oriented conversations.

«“At 66, Nigeria's story is still being written. Let us be part of the chapter that speaks of unity, courage, innovation, opportunity and progress. Let us continue to believe in Nigeria and contribute our quota to building the country we all desire.”»

He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful, prosperous and memorable Independence celebration.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria! 🇳🇬
