Lost at Sea for 95 Days: Fisherman Survives on Turtles, Cockroaches, and Sheer Willpower!

In an extraordinary tale of endurance, 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa Castro survived 95 harrowing days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. His ordeal began on December 7, 2024, when he departed from Marcona, Peru, for a routine two-week fishing expedition. However, a severe storm ten days into the trip blew his vessel off course, leaving him stranded with limited supplies.

Faced with the vast expanse of the ocean and dwindling resources, Castro exhibited remarkable resilience. He collected rainwater to stay hydrated and sustained himself by consuming whatever the sea offered, including turtles, birds, and even cockroaches. In the final 15 days before his rescue, he endured without any food, highlighting his incredible fortitude.

During this grueling period, thoughts of his family kept his spirits alive. He reflected daily on his mother and two-month-old granddaughter, drawing strength from their memories. His family, though distressed, maintained hope, with his mother, Elena, expressing profound gratitude upon his return.

The turning point came on March 11, 2025, when the Ecuadorian patrol vessel Don F spotted his boat approximately 680 miles off the coast. Castro was found severely dehydrated and in critical condition. He was promptly transported to Paita for medical evaluation and subsequently flown to Lima. At Jorge Chávez International Airport, an emotional reunion unfolded as he embraced his daughter, Ines, who awaited him with a bottle of pisco, Peru's national drink.

Back in his hometown of San Andrés, the community celebrated his miraculous return. Streets were adorned with decorations, and plans were made to belatedly celebrate his birthday, which had passed during his time at sea. His niece, Leyla Torres Napa, poignantly remarked on the significance of this celebration, noting that during his ordeal, all he had to mark the occasion was a small cookie, symbolizing his rebirth.

Castro's survival story is a testament to human resilience and the unyielding will to live, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
