39 Years of Grace, Leadership & Unwavering Public Service: Reflections from the Right Honourable Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly

Today, I joyfully mark my 39th birthday — a milestone that symbolizes more than another year of life. It reflects God’s abundant grace, transformative growth, steadfast service, and unwavering purpose. At this point in my life, I am reminded deeply of the lessons learnt, the responsibilities shouldered, and the opportunities to serve the good people of Oyo State and Nigeria that have shaped my journey. This milestone isn’t just personal — it is a moment of reflection on a life devoted to public service, leadership, and making a lasting impact.

A Journey of Humble Beginnings and Purposeful Service

From my early days before public office to today, life has granted me the privilege of experiences that continually teach resilience, accountability, and empathy. These values have remained central to my philosophy as a public servant — guided always by a deep sense of purpose and a clear understanding that leadership is not a position of power but an opportunity to serve with humility.

In Nigeria, stories of youthful leadership shaping the destiny of governance, while rare, are celebrated. I had the honour of becoming the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly at a relatively young age — a role I assumed unopposed in June 2019, marking me as one of the youngest individuals to lead a state legislature in Nigeria.

Understanding the Mandate of the Oyo State House of Assembly

The Oyo State House of Assembly — the legislative arm of the state government — serves a critical role in shaping policies, enacting laws, and ensuring effective oversight of the state’s executive branch. Composed of 32 members elected from constituencies across the state, the Assembly bears the constitutional responsibility of advancing good governance, representation, and legislative oversight.

As Speaker, I have the honour of presiding over this distinguished body — a responsibility that extends beyond parliamentary leadership to embody the collective aspirations, concerns, and welfare of the people we represent.

Gratitude to Mentors, Colleagues, and Constituents

Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without the support of many individuals whose contributions have been profound:

Mentors who have given wisdom and strategic insight,

Colleagues and lawmakers whose collaboration strengthens the legislative process,

Support staff who ensure the seamless functioning of the Assembly,

Friends and family whose encouragement and belief have been unwavering,

And most importantly, the people of Oyo State — whose trust and aspirations have continually fuelled my commitment to public service.

Every phone call, message of encouragement, and constructive feedback from citizens enriches my purpose and fortifies my resolve to deliver meaningful impact for every constituency we serve.

Leadership Through Action: Legislative Achievements and Reforms

Over my tenure as Speaker, our legislative agenda has been anchored on laws and actions that seek to improve governance, strengthen democracy, and promote socio‑economic development in Oyo State. Some notable milestones include:

1. Robust Legislative Output and Oversight

Under my leadership — across the 9th and 10th Assemblies — the House has recorded significant legislative activity. By the end of the first year of the 10th Assembly, we successfully passed 16 bills and 170 resolutions, with several already assented to by the governor.

Also, during earlier terms of the Assembly, our lawmakers had passed dozens of bills into law with a commitment to promote economic growth, social welfare, and public accountability.

2. Emphasis on Good Governance and People‑Centred Laws

At various town hall meetings and public engagements, the Assembly has reaffirmed its dedication to laws that enhance the welfare of citizens, uphold democratic principles, and reinforce transparency in governance. Our legislative actions have been designed to reflect the needs of our communities — from economic policy to security and social services.

3. Elevating Legislative Leadership Nationwide

In 2023, I had the honour of being elected Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria. This historic milestone marked a generational shift in national legislative leadership and highlighted the growing influence of dynamic, reform‑oriented leadership in state governance. This position — a first for someone from an opposition party — demonstrates collective confidence in visionary and inclusive legislative leadership.

Each of these achievements reflects the collective effort of my colleagues and the enduring belief that meaningful legislation can be a catalyst for social progress and accountability.

Rededicating to Purpose in the New Chapter at 39

On this special day, I recommit myself to deeper service, stronger leadership, and greater impact. As I step into this new chapter, my focus is not just on personal celebration, but on reaffirming my commitment to the people — to work even harder for:

A more prosperous and united Oyo State, where opportunities are abundant and livelihoods are protected.

A progressive Nigeria, strengthened by accountable leadership, democratic values, and a shared vision for peace and prosperity.

A legislature that remains responsive, transparent, and people‑centred — one that listens, engages, and acts for the common good.

I am reminded that public service is a lifelong commitment — one that demands integrity, courage, and empathy. Each day holds new opportunities to build bridges, advance reforms, and strengthen governance for the benefit of every citizen.

Acknowledging Shared Support and Collective Aspiration

To every mentor, colleague, friend, family member, and citizen who has walked part of this journey with me — thank you. Your support, encouragement, and shared belief in what’s possible motivates me to strive even harder. Public service is not an individual achievement — it is a collective pursuit built on the hopes and contributions of many.

Your trust fuels the passion that drives this mission forward each day.

Celebrating 39 and Looking Beyond

As I celebrate this milestone, I embrace each lesson learned, every challenge embraced, and through it all, the steadfast belief that the best is yet to come. At 39, I affirm that life’s meaning is found not in personal accolades, but in purposeful service, impactful leadership, and unwavering dedication to the progress of our people and our nation.

39 and rising — because the best is truly yet to come.
