Coalition Threat or Political Puppet? Okonkwo Alleges APC Using Nafiu Bala to Destabilize ADC

ADC Leadership Crisis: Kenneth Okonkwo Alleges Political Interference as Nafiu Bala’s Legal Challenge Sparks Controversy

A senior figure and legal practitioner within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has strongly criticized the recent legal action initiated by the party’s former Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, describing it as both “ridiculous” and politically motivated.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Okonkwo provided a detailed account of the internal developments within the ADC, particularly addressing Bala’s prior resignation and the circumstances surrounding the party’s ongoing coalition efforts.

According to Okonkwo, Nafiu Bala had formally stepped down from his position within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in May 2025. He emphasized that the resignation was neither forced nor disputed at the time, but rather a deliberate and documented decision made in the interest of fostering unity and enabling structural reforms within the party.

Providing specific details, Okonkwo disclosed that Bala personally authored, signed, and submitted a resignation letter dated May 17, 2025, which was officially filed on May 26, 2025. In the letter, Bala reportedly stated in clear terms that he was relinquishing his role for the “greater good” of the party, particularly to allow for a smooth coalition process and internal restructuring aimed at strengthening the ADC’s political positioning.

The former spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign further argued that Bala’s earlier decision to step aside undermines the legitimacy of his current legal challenge against the party’s leadership, now headed by David Mark. Okonkwo maintained that the leadership arrangement emerged from collective decisions taken by the party’s former executive committee, making any subsequent attempt to contest it both morally questionable and legally weak.

He stressed that Bala, having voluntarily exited the NWC, lacks the standing to challenge decisions that were made after his resignation. In his view, the legal action represents a contradiction of Bala’s earlier commitment to party unity and progress.

Okonkwo went further to suggest that the controversy may not be entirely internal. He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be playing a role behind the scenes. According to him, the growing influence and perceived momentum of the ADC-led coalition may have triggered concerns within rival political circles.

He claimed that Bala’s sudden re-emergence and legal confrontation coincide with a period when the ADC coalition is gaining traction, leading to suspicions that external political interests might be leveraging internal disagreements to destabilize the party.

Describing Bala’s actions as those of a “spoiler,” Okonkwo warned that such moves could undermine the progress made in unifying opposition forces and building a credible alternative political platform in Nigeria. He emphasized that political parties require consistency, trust, and adherence to collective decisions, especially during sensitive periods of coalition-building.

The situation highlights broader tensions within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, where alliances, defections, and internal disputes often shape party dynamics ahead of major electoral cycles. Analysts note that coalition-building remains a critical strategy for opposition parties seeking to challenge dominant political structures, but such efforts are frequently tested by internal divisions and external pressures.

As the dispute unfolds, stakeholders within the ADC and the wider political community will be watching closely to see how the leadership crisis is resolved and whether the party can maintain cohesion amid growing political competition.

For now, Okonkwo’s remarks underscore a firm position: that Nafiu Bala’s prior resignation, documented and voluntary, fundamentally weakens his current legal claims and raises serious questions about the motivations behind his renewed involvement in the party’s affairs.
