Oyo 2027 Is Already a Political Circus — And Arapaja Just Entered the Ring

Oyo 2027: Arapaja’s Governorship Move Deepens PDP Power Game as Political Tension Rises

The political atmosphere in Oyo State is rapidly transforming into a gripping drama ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with new alliances, hidden interests, and succession calculations beginning to unfold within the major political parties. What initially appeared to be a routine political transition is gradually becoming one of the most intriguing power contests in the Southwest.

At the center of the unfolding conversation is the recent declaration by former Deputy Governor and current PDP National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, who has officially submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest for the office of Governor of Oyo State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. The forms were reportedly submitted to the party’s National Organizing Secretary, Hon. Dakas Shan.

The development has immediately triggered intense political speculation across the state, especially among loyalists of Governor Seyi Makinde and the various camps battling for influence within the PDP nationally.

Observers now believe the governorship succession race in Oyo State may not only determine who succeeds Makinde in 2027, but could also become a strategic battle for control of the PDP structure in the Southwest. The growing political tension has led many to ask difficult questions: Is Arapaja positioning himself independently, or is there a carefully designed political arrangement already in motion? Could this move be part of a broader attempt to neutralize the influence of the camp loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike within the PDP?

While no official statement has linked Arapaja’s ambition to any factional battle, political watchers insist the timing and symbolism surrounding his declaration cannot be ignored. Arapaja is not a newcomer in Oyo politics. A longtime political figure with deep roots in Ibadan’s traditional PDP structure, he previously served as Deputy Governor under late former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala between 2007 and 2011.

Beyond his state-level influence, Arapaja currently occupies a critical national position within the PDP as Interim National Secretary, placing him at the center of ongoing internal realignments within the opposition party. His emergence in the Oyo governorship race is therefore being interpreted by many analysts as more than an ordinary political ambition.

Recent reports have also shown that the race to succeed Governor Makinde is becoming increasingly crowded, with several prominent figures across the PDP, APC, ADC, Accord, and other parties already mobilizing supporters and consulting stakeholders. However, Arapaja’s entry appears to have altered the political conversation more dramatically because of his strategic relationship with key stakeholders both within Oyo State and at the national level.

Within political circles, there are growing suggestions that Governor Makinde may be quietly shaping the succession narrative behind the scenes while maintaining public neutrality. Some analysts believe the governor is determined to retain significant influence after leaving office and may support a candidate capable of preserving both his political legacy and his hold on the PDP structure in the state.

Others, however, argue that the situation remains fluid and unpredictable. Oyo politics has historically been known for unexpected alliances, betrayals, and last-minute power shifts. This has made the emerging succession battle difficult to decode, even for seasoned political observers.

What remains clear is that the PDP in Oyo State is gradually entering a defining phase that could reshape the future of the party not only in the state but across the Southwest region.

As the political chessboard continues to evolve, one thing is certain: the battle for Agodi Government House has officially begun, and the coming months may reveal whether Arapaja’s ambition is simply personal political aspiration or part of a much bigger strategy within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
