World Environment Day 2026: OJO Unveils Vision for a Greener, Safer and More Sustainable Ibadan North-West/South-West Constituency

As the global community commemorates World Environment Day 2026 on June 5, frontline House of Representatives aspirant for the Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), has joined millions of people across the world in advocating for greater environmental responsibility, sustainable development, and collective action to preserve the planet for future generations.

World Environment Day, observed annually under the leadership of the United Nations, serves as the world's largest platform for environmental awareness and action. The occasion highlights the urgent need to protect natural resources, combat climate change, reduce pollution, and promote environmentally sustainable practices across communities, nations, and continents.

In his goodwill message marking the occasion, Hon. Ogunbayo emphasized that environmental sustainability is no longer an option but a necessity for economic growth, public health, food security, and community development.

According to him, the environmental challenges confronting Nigeria—including recurring floods, indiscriminate waste disposal, erosion, deforestation, desertification, environmental degradation, and pollution—require deliberate policies, strategic investments, and active citizen participation.

He noted that communities across Oyo State and Nigeria have increasingly experienced the devastating impact of environmental neglect, particularly during annual rainy seasons when flooding destroys homes, businesses, roads, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.

"As citizens, community leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, we all share a responsibility to protect the environment that sustains us. A cleaner, greener, and healthier environment is fundamental to building prosperous and resilient communities," Hon. Ogunbayo stated.

The federal legislative hopeful further stressed the importance of environmental education, proper waste management systems, tree-planting initiatives, renewable energy development, climate adaptation strategies, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations.

He pledged that, if given the opportunity to represent the good people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, environmental sustainability, urban development, youth engagement, community health, and climate-conscious policies would remain integral parts of his legislative agenda.

Hon. Ogunbayo also encouraged residents, market associations, youth groups, civil society organizations, schools, religious institutions, and community development associations to embrace environmental stewardship by keeping their surroundings clean, supporting recycling initiatives, protecting water bodies, and promoting sustainable living practices.

He reaffirmed his commitment to championing people-oriented legislation and constituency-driven initiatives that will improve the quality of life of residents while ensuring a safer and healthier environment for future generations.

"As we celebrate World Environment Day, let us renew our commitment to safeguarding our environment. The future we desire depends largely on the actions we take today. Together, we can build communities that are cleaner, healthier, safer, and more sustainable for all," he added.

The occasion also provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring wisdom of one of history's notable statesmen, George C. Marshall, whose famous declaration remains relevant in today's interconnected world:

«"Peace, prosperity and freedom are indivisible."»

Just as peace and prosperity are interconnected, environmental sustainability remains inseparable from economic progress, social stability, and national development.

Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO) extends warm wishes to all residents of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Oyo State, and Nigerians at large on this year's World Environment Day, while encouraging everyone to play their part in protecting the environment for present and future generations.
