Falana to Tinubu: Caution Wike and Fayose Against Politicizing Oriire Kidnapping Crisis

"If You Know the Sponsors, Report Them" — Falana Challenges Politicians Over Oriire Kidnap Allegations

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution political figures against making inflammatory statements capable of worsening tensions surrounding the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Falana's intervention follows a wave of political accusations and counter-accusations that emerged after the abduction, with some prominent voices suggesting that the incident may have been politically motivated. Among the most controversial claims was the allegation that the Oyo State Government orchestrated the kidnapping in an attempt to embarrass or blackmail President Tinubu. The allegation sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the basis of such a serious accusation.

According to Falana, security matters involving the safety and lives of citizens should never be reduced to political propaganda or partisan battles. He argued that making unverified claims about a criminal incident of such magnitude could distract security agencies from their primary responsibility of apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring justice for victims.

The senior lawyer questioned the logic behind allegations that the state government arranged the kidnapping, stressing that such claims should be supported by credible evidence if they are to be taken seriously. He noted that if anyone possesses concrete information linking political actors to the kidnapping or knows the alleged sponsors behind the crime, the appropriate course of action would be to report such information to the relevant security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

Falana maintained that public speculation without evidence only fuels confusion and creates unnecessary tension within an already traumatized society. He emphasized that security challenges confronting Nigeria require cooperation among federal, state, and local authorities rather than a blame game driven by political interests.

His comments also come amid growing concerns over statements attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose. Critics have accused both politicians of making comments capable of inflaming political divisions in Oyo State at a time when residents are demanding urgent solutions to insecurity rather than political confrontation.

Observers have argued that the focus should remain on strengthening security architecture and supporting efforts aimed at rescuing victims and preventing future attacks. The Oriire kidnapping incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about criminal activities across various parts of the country, particularly in rural communities where residents often complain of inadequate security presence.

Falana stressed that political leaders must exercise restraint in their public comments, especially during periods of crisis. According to him, leaders have a responsibility to unite citizens and inspire confidence in security institutions rather than deepen suspicion through unsubstantiated allegations.

The legal luminary further urged the Federal Government to prioritize intelligence gathering, community policing initiatives, and collaboration with state governments in tackling the evolving security threats facing the nation. He warned that the politicization of criminal incidents could undermine public trust in ongoing investigations and weaken collective efforts to combat insecurity.

Many Nigerians have echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the kidnapping should be treated first and foremost as a security emergency rather than a political contest. Public attention, they say, should be directed toward identifying and prosecuting those responsible instead of engaging in partisan exchanges that offer little comfort to affected families.

As investigations continue, Falana's message serves as a reminder that national security should transcend political interests. He called on all stakeholders—including politicians, government officials, and public commentators—to avoid statements capable of escalating tensions and to allow security agencies to carry out their duties professionally.

Ultimately, the demand from many citizens remains clear: accountability, justice for victims, and effective measures to prevent future kidnappings. For Falana, achieving these objectives requires facts, evidence, and responsible leadership—not political accusations unsupported by proof.
